Wake Up Little Susie

Wake Up Little Susie

Today is all about girl’s names that begin with the letter S. There are a lot of songs it would seem that fit that bill. Robert gave me some ideas. I hardly knew where to begin.

So I have picked a song from yesteryear “Wake Up Little Susie”, from The Everly Brothers. When I read up about this song, I was surprised to learn that it was banned from Boston radio stations for it’s “suggestive” lyrics. My how things have changed!

For my own amusement I compared some of the various covers of this song over the years and came across a fairly recent cover by The Ennis Brothers (tagged a link to their cover at the bottom of this page). The video features a couple who break into a cinema in broad daylight – a heinous crime which has crossed my own mind during pandemic lockdowns. This wild rioting couple seem more interested in throwing popcorn at each other that seeing the postponed James Bond film.

Wake up, little Susie, wake up
Wake up, little Susie, wake up

We've both been sound asleep
Wake up little Susie and weep
The movie's over, it's four o'clock
And we're in trouble deep

Wake up, little Susie
Wake up, little Susie

Well, what are we gonna tell your Mama
What are we gonna tell your Pa?
What are we gonna tell our friends
When they say, "Ooh la la!"

Wake up, little Susie
Wake up, little Susie

Well, I told your Mama that you'd be in by ten
Well, Susie baby, looks like we goofed again
Wake up, little Susie
Wake up, little Susie
We gotta go home

Wake up, little Susie, wake up
Wake up, little Susie, wake up

The movie wasn't so hot
It didn't have much of a plot
We fell asleep, our goose is cooked
Our reputation is shot

Wake up, little Susie
Wake up, little Susie

Well, what are we gonna tell your Ma-ma
What are we gonna tell your Pa?
What are we gonna tell our friends
When they say, "Ooh la la!"

Wake up, little Susie
Wake up, little Susie
Wake up, little Susie
