Only A Month We’ve Been Apart

Only A Month We’ve Been Apart

Jim has asked us to feature break up songs for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday. I think this is a great theme and I am sure that some of the most loved music out there was written due to breakups.

I have not been through a break up since I left university! Yet even I am moved by the soul-churning broken-hearted anthems out there. For me Adele probably tops the charts for a break-up song – the perfect blend of “I am never really going to get over you but I am going to go on with my life pretending I am until it feels like I am alive again – in the meantime you and your new lady-friend should remember I am still hurt to the core and I know where you live!”

I wanted to choose something different though….I wanted to pick an Ed Sheeran song that I guess captures the slight pain and shame in realizing after a breakup that your ex is much happier without you. I love the puppet video too! Despite the puppets, Ed said this was his first “grown up” break-up song, having experienced himself that after a break-up you can be happy for each other as each finds their own happiness.

The verse for me that says it best is this one:

“Ain’t nobody hurt you like I hurt you But ain’t nobody need you like I do

I know that there’s others that deserve you But my darling I am still in love with you”

Credits: Ryan Tedder, Ed Sheeran, Benjamin Levin

Walking down 29th and park
I saw you in another's arms
Only a month we've been apart
You look happier

Saw you walk inside a bar
He said something to make you laugh
I saw that both your smiles were twice as wide as ours
Yeah you look happier, you do

Ain't nobody hurt you like I hurt you
But ain't nobody love you like I do
Promise that I will not take it personal baby
If you're moving on with someone new

Cause baby you look happier, you do
My friends told me one day I'll feel it too
And until then I'll smile to hide the truth
But I know I was happier with you

Sat in the corner of the room
Everything's reminding me of you
Nursing an empty bottle and telling myself you're happier
Aren't you?

Ain't nobody hurt you like I hurt you
But ain't nobody need you like I do
I know that there's others that deserve you
But my darling I am still in love with you

But I guess you look happier, you do
My friends told me one day I'll feel it too
I could try to smile to hide the truth
But I know I was happier with you

Baby you look happier, you do
I knew one day you'd fall for someone new
But if he breaks your heart like lovers do
Just know that I'll be waiting here for you

  1. What a lovely post – You’ve certainly summed up the subtext in Adele’s song. Also I’d never seen Ed’s video for Happier so that was a nice 3 minute surprise. Break-ups are tough and push your emotions to the limit which is why so many songs have been written about them, but if you’re ever going through one, they are suddenly the only songs you pick up on when listening to the radio. You analyse the lyrics to the nth degree and compare with your own situation (not that I’ve ever been there of course!).
