A Fortune Won And Lost On Every Deal

A Fortune Won And Lost On Every Deal

Today I had to choose between an ABBA track and song made famous by Elvis Presley. Elvis won out in the end. Jim’s theme choice for today’s Song Lyric Sunday includes “fortune”. How many have gambled with the hopes of winning a fortune under the garish lights of Las Vegas? How many have had their hopes dashed when they lost a fortune?

I’ve always felt that one of the last places on earth I would want to visit is Las Vegas, perhaps there are some hidden aspects I would enjoy – but the way it is marketed makes it seems like the tackiest, sleaziest, most cringe-worthy of all cities.

However, Elvis has redeemed Las Vegas from being written off by me completely. At times I rather enjoy a cheesy track and Elvis had a knack of being able to set fire to the cabaret. This him gyrating and singing “Viva Las Vegas”. Apologies to any residents of the spangly town who might have read my harsh words above.

Bright light city gonna set my soul
Gonna set my soul on fire
Got a whole lot of money that's ready to burn
So get those stakes up higher
There's a thousand pretty women waitin' out there
And they're all livin' devil may care
And I'm just the devil with love to spare
Viva Las Vegas, Viva Las Vegas

How I wish that there were more
Than the twenty-four hours in the day
'Cause even if there were forty more
I wouldn't sleep a minute away
Oh, there's black jack and poker and the roulette wheel
A fortune won and lost on ev'ry deal
All you need's a strong heart and a nerve of steel
Viva Las Vegas, Viva Las Vegas

Viva Las Vegas with you neon flashin'
And your one armbandits crashin'
All those hopes down the drain
Viva Las Vegas turnin' day into nighttime
Turnin' night into daytime
If you see it once
You'll never be the same again

I'm gonna keep on the run
I'm gonna have me some fun
If it costs me my very last dime
If I wind up broke up well
I'll always remember that I had a swingin' time
I'm gonna give it ev'rything I've got
Lady luck please let the dice stay hot
Let me shoot a seven with ev'ry shot
Viva Las Vegas, Viva Las Vegas
Viva, Viva Las Vegas

  1. I had this job which required me to travel to California and the plane always made a stop over in Las Vegas. I never left the airport, but I won about $40 on slot machines every time I was there, ci viva Las Vegas. Nice choice Lady A.
