Blue Jeans Sitting On The Beach

Blue Jeans Sitting On The Beach

A much more cheery theme for today’s Song Lyric Sunday. We have started to feel a little more confident about the idea of venturing overseas for some sunshine. Robert and I first met when we were holidaying in the same resort, and ever since then trips abroad have been part of our adventure together. I have to admit, there is a part of me that would love to indulge myself in little lazing on the beach. Just enough to feel my body and mind completely relaxing after over two years of dramatic events and emotional roller-coasters. I am only human after all.

The song that I have chosen featuring a word from Jim’s theme is a blast from the past. We have a friend who looks like Phil Collins – the resemblance is extraordinary, and I think he is probably fed up of how many times people mention it to him. This track was one that never seems to have left my mind since the day I first heard it. The incredibly catchy “I Cant’s Dance” from Genesis, won a Grammy, and has that wonderful charm of a group of professional musicians poking fun at themselves for not being particularly hip. That air of fun was one we adored, and this simple track became hugely popular. The video only adds to the fun of the lyrics. Spot the spoofs of popular Levis’ commercials (two of which I have tagged at the end of this post). It is a little gem of lighthearted pop brilliance.

Hot sun beating down
burning my feet just walking around.

Hot sun making me sweat
'Gators getting close, hasn't got me yet

I can't dance, I can't talk.
Only thing about me is the way I walk.
I can't dance, I can't sing
I'm just standing here selling everything.

Blue jeans sitting on the beach,
her dog's talking to me, but she's out of reach.

She's got a body under that shirt,
but all she wants to do is rub my face in the dirt.

Cos, I can't dance, I can't talk.
Only thing about me is the way I walk.
I can't dance, I can't sing
I'm just standing here selling.

Oh and checking everything is in place,
you never know who's looking on.

Young punk spilling beer on my shoes,
fat guy's talking to me trying to steal my blues.

Thick smoke, see her smiling through.
I never thought so much could happen just shooting pool.

But I can't dance, I can't talk.
The only thing about me is the way that I walk.
I can't dance, I can't sing
I'm just standing here selling

Oh and checking everything is in place
You never know who's looking on
A perfect body with a perfect face - uh-huh.

No, I can't dance, I can't talk.
The only thing about me is the way I walk.
No, I can't dance, I can't sing
I'm just standing here selling everything.

But I can walk.
No I can't dance.
No no no I can't dance
No I said I can't sing.
But I can walk.

  1. I remember singing this song at primary school. It was so catchy, and we used to pretend to walk like those chaps. But I had no idea how much fun the entire video was – I only remember the walk.

  2. Great choice I read like Genisis great group. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ. Our eldest son who has red hair what’s often mistaken for Mick Hucknel, (Simply Red) especially when we all went on a holiday in Greace, he was in his 20s then and Mick Hucknel would of been about ten years older. Embarrassing for our son who’s Red dreadlocks and piercing blue eyes belied his musical choice. ….his dreadlocks are gone and forgive me for saying he has aged better so far.
