How Will I Know?

How Will I Know?

If a song is presented to an artist (or more likely their management team) how will they know whether it is going to be a hit? For today’s Song Lyric Sunday (which Fandango is hosting) Jim has asked us to feature songs that were turned down by recording artists that went on to become big hits. I had to ask the worldwide web for help again with this theme, and among the significant list of tracks that qualify for this category, one stood out because of the memories I have of dancing to it in my youth.

“How Will I Know” was apparently written with Janet Jackson in mind, but her management team heard the track and felt it was too weak compared to other material they had for Janet. In the meantime, a team were working hard at preparing he debut album of a young lady who would go on to become one of the biggest music sensations of the decade…and beyond.

I have to admit, I find it very moving to watch Whitney Houston looking so healthy and fresh-faced. This was such a fun song to dance to, and although Whitney was the queen of power ballads, I love these feel good dance tracks that popped up on her albums.

There's a boy I know, he's the one I dream of
Looks into my eyes, takes me to the clouds above
Ooh, I lose control, can't seem to get enough
When I wake from dreaming, tell me, is it really love?

Ooh, how will I know? (Don't trust your feelings)
How will I know?
How will I know? (Love can be deceiving)
How will I know?

How will I know if he really loves me?
I say a prayer with every heart beat
I fall in love whenever we meet
I'm asking you what you know about these things
How will I know if he's thinking of me?
I try to phone, but I'm too shy (Can't speak)
Falling in love is so bittersweet
This love is strong, why do I feel weak?

Oh, wake me, I'm shaking
Wish I had you near me now
Said there's no mistakin'
What I feel is really love
Ooh, tell me

How will I know? (Don't trust your feelings)
How will I know?
How will I know? (Love can be deceiving)
How will I know?

How will I know if he really loves me?
I say a prayer with every heart beat
I fall in love whenever we meet
I'm asking you what you know about these things
How will I know if he's thinking of me?
I try to phone, but I'm too shy (Can't speak)
Falling in love is so bittersweet
This love is strong, why do I feel weak?

If he loves me
If he loves me not
If he loves me
If he loves me not
If he loves me
If he loves me not
Oh, how will I know?
How will I know?
How will I know?
Hey, how will I know?

How will I know if he really loves me?
I say a prayer with every heart beat
I fall in love whenever we meet
I'm asking you what you know about these things
How will I know if he's thinking of me?
I try to phone, but I'm too shy (Can't speak)
Falling in love is so bittersweet
This love is strong, why do I feel weak?

How will I know? (How will I know?)
How will I know?
How will I know? (I say a prayer)
How will I know? Ooh
How will I know? (I fall in love)
How will I know?
How will I know?
I'm asking you

  1. Great song ! I was never a fan of her Power Ballards but as you say this is a great dance song! She really died too young and had a sad life.
I am a believer in fate and she was meant to sing this song.💜
