I’ve Got So Much Honey The Bees Envy Me

When I saw Jim’s very sweet selection of words to inspire today’s Song Lyric Sunday, one song came straight to mind, but Robert said “too obvious”. While I do agree with him, as I started to think of more songs that could fit these themes, I realized that lots of them were obvious choices. So for that reason, I have chosen to share perhaps a very obvious, but truly delightful track.

“My Girl” from The Temptations, which has always been a remarkable track, but attention on it was revived after that moving film which I remember choked me up at the time – as it touched on the subject of death through a child’s eyes. I often think we should all retain that view of death – as there are too many people who seem unmoved at the extinguishing of life. Whereas death is so unnatural, so awful, so cruel – an enemy that needs to be conquered.

But back to this song…what a very famous song. I love it when the first three seconds of a track are so distinctive and so iconic that you know exactly what is to come. I still find that “My Girl” is one of those tracks that makes me want to stop working and turn up the radio so I can sing along or have a dance around the kitchen. The story behind the chart-topping track, the specific singer who took the lead with the vocals, and changes with the group are interesting enough to have inspired a movie (see video at the end of this post).

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day
When it's cold outside I've got the month of May

I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl)

I've got so much honey the bees envy me
I've got a sweeter song than the birds in the trees

Well, I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl)

Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey
Ooooh

I don't need no money, fortune or fame
I've got all the riches, baby, one man can claim

Well, I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl)

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day
With my girl
I've even got the month of May
With my girl
Talkin' 'bout
Talkin' 'bout
Talkin' 'bout
My girl
Ooooh
My girl
As long as I can talk about my girl...
