Make A Cup Of Tea, Put A Record On

I do wonder whether the theme Jim has chosen for today’s Song Lyric Sunday might be interpreted differently depending on which side of the Atlantic you are on. The most recent significant “indie rock” era this side of the Atlantic was better known under the term “Britpop” – which I am pretty certain many rock bands detested being labelled with. Yet this came to distinguish a golden age for independent record labels here in the UK, during which we were flooded with exciting and energetic rock bands – full of a certain attitude that captures everyone’s attention.

I knew this golden era of UK Indie Rock was bubbling and brewing away, but there was one band that drew me in to embracing an entire genre – and that was one of the “girl-bands”. They were called Elastica, and I still remember the day I heard this song on the radio and loved it. I sang and sang this track – simple lyrics, punchy tune, heady mix of guitars – absolute UK Indie rock bliss! This is their track “Waking Up”.
