I’ve Got Some Records On

Well, not such a cheerful for today’s Song Lyric Sunday theme. I always think of Grunge music as rather depressing and despairing. It has a certain legacy, one that I don’t feel any connection to. I did a little research and came across a familiar track – Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Son” and then I remembered the awfulness of MTV. We used to listen to music while we were studying or dining or working. MTV came along and suggested we could sit and watch music and become couch potato music lovers. It did not suit me at all. So many music videos were so awful, I decided I did not like the song (whereas if I had just heard it on the radio, I don’t think I would have minded). “Black Hole Son” was one of the videos on MTV that I hated and it seemed to be played several times a day (fellow student house-mates who were addicted to the channel).

I have found a track that I do enjoy though. I decided to feature a video of a live performance of the track. I was reading a review of the album”1977” from the band Ash, and the review praised their blending of grunge and pop. I decided to listen to some of their tracks again, and sure enough – the sound that I associate with Grunge music is very much present, without the angry misery. This is probably one of the best examples of how this band embraced the sound of Grunge. It is a song called “Goldfinger”.

Move closer, set my mind on fire
Taking over, the world seems so alive
The world seems so alive

She slips into the night, and she is gone
Gone to settle the score, gone into the town
Rain shining in her eyes
Her brother started school
Again today, a thought to pass the time
To occupy my mind, while I'm waiting for her

Down in the basement, listening to the rain
Thinking things over. I think it over again
I think it over again

She slips into the night, and she was gone
Gone to settle the score, gone into the town
Rain shining in her eyes
Her brother started school
Again today, a thought to pass the time
To occupy my mind, while I'm waiting for her

I'm riding it down, listen to the rain
She'll be here soon, I lie back and drift away
I lie back and drift away.

She slips into the night, and she was gone
Gone to settle the score, gone into the town
Rain shining in her eyes
Her brother started school
Again today, a thought to pass the time
To occupy my mind, while I'm waiting for her

I'm feeling so alive, feeling so real
On a stormy night, the rain is coming down
Rain like never before
I've got some records on, some bottles of wine
On a stormy night, the rain is lashing down
And I'm waiting for her

  1. Great choice… The video made me smile I remember our eldest used to go to Glastonbury every year until in his words he got too old! I liked the video because I remember the muddy years…even after he’d left home his tent and clothes came back to our house to be cleaned up!!! Have a good day 💜

  2. I like the grunge music much better than the depressing grunge lyrics and you made a great choice going with this today, Lady A. Ash is new to me, but they have a nice sound.
