This week’s Song Lyric Sunday is a celebration of the UK music show “Top Of The Pops”. When I was growing up, Thursday night was Top of the Pops night. I remember it well. I should have been finishing that essay, but I just had to tune in to see the line up of songs, knowing all my friends would want to talk about the show at school the next day.
I have picked a song that was on TOTP way before my time. I have seen this performance on several times over the years, and it makes me realize why the seventies launched Top of the Pops to a mandatory part of teenage culture. This is the legendary David Bowie with “Starman”.

Hey now, now
Oh, oh, oh
Didn't know what time it was, the lights were low
I leaned back on my radio
Some cat was laying down some rock 'n' roll
"Lotta soul," he said
Then the loud sound did seem to fade
Came back like a slow voice on a wave of phase
That weren't no DJ, that was hazy cosmic jive
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He's told us not to blow it
'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile
He told me
Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie
I had to phone someone so I picked on you
Hey, that's far out, so you heard him too
Switch on the TV, we may pick him up on channel two
Look out your window, I can see his light
If we can sparkle he may land tonight
Don't tell your poppa or he'll get us locked up in fright
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He's told us not to blow it
'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile
He told me
Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie
Starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He's told us not to blow it
'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile
He told me
Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie

A great choice – second time today, and I played it last week! Rather proves your point about this being a major contribution to music culture back then 😊

I would like to think that the star man is still waiting in the sky, but why he is still waiting is beyond me. Lovely choice.
