Last week, we needed to use up some of the tubs inside the fridge. We pick up tubs from Bailey & Sage – and then put them into the fridge and forget about them. So supper turned out to be some tagliatelle using the fresh pesto we had bought with some olives on the side (for those discerning members of the household who like olives) and some rocket with parmesan shavings and olive oil.
The wine Robert picked for our easy supper was Montepulciano D’Abruzzo, another red from Marks & Spencer. We rarely opt for white wine in the winter months. It felt light and fresh fruit wafted out when I first breathed in it’s fragrance. The fruit being cherry. But I immediately picked up on the peppered hue which went with our simple supper so very well.
I would consign this wine to a nothing special but very complimentary to a simple Mediterranean supper. Sometimes it’s not about the wine itself, it’s about how well it blends with your meal. This little corker slips easily on to the dinner table and though not making a bold statement of it’s own, seemed enhance a humble but tasty meal.

I agree with your views on montepulciano – it is a very good dinner wine with many Italian dishes – in fact they used to have it as their house wine in “Pizza Express” many years ago 😉 I do prefer a deeper wine such as Rioja or Malbec when eating red meat. I do like food posts!

I have to admit May, Robert is the one who normally orders for me, and I always approve. I am enjoying my foodies posts, but the wine reviews are more challenging to me. I am starting to explore each bottle Robert opens and give it a real good sniff and savour it so that I can make some notes to type up later.
We have a Pizza Express just a couple of minutes walk away. I don’t think we have stepped foot in there for over five years. But our area is often very busy at the weekends and the restaurants are packed (pre-pandemic) so we end up driving into central London or over to Surrey or Berkshire to restaurants recommended to us. We always prefer to host dinner parties though. That is something we have missed a lot this past year. Our house was always full at weekends.
